Flowering flora commonly found on the Ele capital world of El-Kera. Nere trees typically measure around two metres in height, and are distinguished by their combination of small, rounded leaves in blue-grey colours and clusters of intricate white flowers, giving the entire plant a frozen or ghostly appearance. Aside from these visual markers, the tree can also be recognised by its scent, which sources describe as fresh and floral with undertones of rich sweetness.
Nere trees are perhaps the most abundant plants found in the hinterlands of El-Kera, prospering due to the planet’s unique soil structure which allows for the growth vast root networks. However, the biological records of the Ele suggest that nere trees are not native to the capital world but rather an invasive species, introduced from elsewhere in the Dominion centuries ago. [Curator’s note: The impact of the Metanation on physical space is a line of inquiry I find particularly compelling.]
The nere tree bears no fruits or seeds, instead producing new trees through the expansion and eventual division of roots. Nevertheless, the nere is prized by the Ele for its scented leaves, which are used in everything from medicinal teas to perfume. The plant’s prolific nature means it is not cultivated using traditional farming methods, but rather harvested as needed, with nere-picking a popular pastime on El-Kera.
Nere tree branches, leaves and flowers are often featured as motifs on Ele masks. Stylised nere designs appear on all forms of mask, suggesting no deeper significance than beauty.
